How do you plan an overseas move from Vasant Vihar?

Vasant Vihar was carved out of the village of Basant Gaon in the 1960s, and many people still write its name as Basant Vihar. Its plots were laid out by the Central Government Servants Cooperative House Building Society, formed in 1959, and they run from about 400 to 2000 square yards. The colony has six blocks, A to F, each with its own local market, and four main streets: Munirka Marg, Vasant Marg, Poorvi Marg and Paschimi Marg, as its Wikipedia entry sets out.

It is a diplomatic as well as a residential area. Vasant Vihar houses over 50 foreign missions, among them the embassies of South Africa and Argentina, and lies near Chanakyapuri, the enclave that hosts most of the embassies in New Delhi. Government housing sits alongside the bungalows too: the CPWD's maintenance list includes a CPWD colony, a CBI colony and flats for Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha staff here. With so many missions close by, a good share of the moves we are asked about are moves abroad, often planned months ahead around a posting date.

Those homes often hold art, rugs, glassware and collected pieces, so an overseas move depends on the inventory. We go room by room, list every item, and agree with you what ships, what goes into storage and what stays behind. Art and glass are packed in wooden cases or drums with insert plates, and each case is numbered to the list. Basant Lok market, Modern School and the Vasant Vihar metro station, on the Magenta Line since 2018, are handy reference points when you give us directions.

We also move homes within Delhi and to other Indian cities. Read about international moving and storage, see our Hauz Khas or Vasant Kunj pages if you are staying nearby, or our packers and movers in Delhi for the rest of the city.

Local know-how

What We Plan For in Vasant Vihar

Long lead times and homes full of fragile pieces. These are the details we settle early.

On the ground in Vasant Vihar South West Delhi

  1. Room-by-room inventory

Every item is listed with its room and case number. The same list serves the shipment, the storage and your own records.

  2. Cases for art and glass

Paintings, sculpture, glass tables and mirrors go into wooden cases or drums, padded so they cannot move.

  3. A three-way split

Some goods ship, some go into storage and some stay with you. Every carton is marked for its destination so nothing ends up in the wrong place.

  4. Block and residence security

Some lanes have guards who ask for vehicle and crew details before a truck is let in, and a mission residence may have its own rules for entry. Share them with us and we send what they need in advance.

  5. Long lead times

An overseas move needs time for the survey, the paperwork and the shipping booking. Get in touch once the posting date is confirmed.

  6. What you keep with you

We cannot carry alcohol, liquids, jewellery, cash, firearms or ammunition. Keep jewellery and cash with you, and plan separately for a wine collection.

Finding your way

Which Roads and Landmarks Around Vasant Vihar Matter on Moving Day?

Embassy frontages on the ring road, a market with a well-known cinema and the low-lying Munirka side are the points a driver needs.

  1. Palam Marg

Palam Marg is the stretch of the Outer Ring Road that serves as the way into Vasant Vihar. Along one side stand about twenty-five houses, a mix of embassies and private homes, set behind a service road, with parks and the Malai Mandir across the road. For one of those houses, ask the residence which part of the service road a vehicle may use.

  2. Basant Lok and PVR Priya

PVR Priya stands at 61 Community Centre, Basant Lok, LBB lists. The PVR chain began there: Wikipedia says the Priya was bought in 1978 by Ajay Bijli's father, who also ran a trucking business. Its name is a clear landmark to give a driver.

  3. The Munirka side

Rain collects on the Munirka side of the colony. When heavy rain hit Delhi on 9 July 2026, Munirka was among the areas listed as waterlogged, The Free Press Journal reported. On a wet day, a vehicle coming from that direction may need another approach.

Embassy Houses Along Vasant Vihar's Edge

Several missions sit on Palam Marg itself. Wikipedia lists the missions of Spain, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Kenya among others, along with a branch of the British High Commission. A move from a house beside one of them may pass a security post, so ask the residence or the mission what notice its guards need before the truck arrives.

What to Settle Before a Vasant Vihar Move

  • Goods-vehicle hours

Since a Delhi Gazette notification of 21 June 2024, circulated by the Delhi Traffic Police on 1 July 2024, roads with a day-time restriction are closed to goods vehicles from 7 am to 11 pm, and roads with a peak-hour restriction from 7 to 11 am and from 5 to 11 pm. Check the current timing when you book, and which kind of restriction applies on your route.

  • A 24-hour ban near Vasant Enclave

A Delhi Traffic Police notification of 15 September 1997 banned heavy and light goods vehicles round the clock on the road between Paschimi Marg, Vasant Vihar, and Link Road, Vasant Enclave, citing the danger to residents. It was still on the force's published list in 2025, so for a home on that stretch, check before you book whether it applies and what permission is needed.

  • Permission papers for the vehicle

If a truck has to run in restricted hours, its operator applies on the Delhi Traffic Police No Entry Permission portal. The portal guide asks for the vehicle number and driving licence, and uploads of the RC, PUC certificate, insurance and fitness certificate.

When to move

When Is a Good Time to Move in Vasant Vihar?

Mid-May is the hottest stretch to pack in. On 19 May 2026 Safdarjung recorded 43.4 °C, its highest May reading in two years, and the Ridge was hotter still at 44.6 °C, The Pioneer reported. For a house full of art and glass, packing in the cooler hours and loading at first light keeps both the crew and the cases out of the worst of it.

Rain hits the airport roads hard. On 20 August 2026 heavy early-morning rain was reported in Chanakyapuri and on Rao Tularam Marg, and Airport Road and the underpasses near it were among the worst hit, Republic reported. If an overseas move has a flight or a cargo slot fixed, leave extra time on a rain day.

Pricing guidance

What decides your moving cost in Vasant Vihar

For a Vasant Vihar move, the destination and the number of wooden cases matter most. On a move abroad, the shipping and the paperwork are part of the price.

Destination
A local move is priced on time and vehicles; a move abroad also on the shipping and the paperwork.
Wooden cases
Each wooden case or drum for art, glass or antiques adds material and time.
Inventory detail
A full room-by-room list takes longer to prepare, and an overseas shipment usually needs one.
Storage
Goods held back in storage are priced on the space they take and the time they stay.
