The Sabarmati divides Ahmedabad into two cities that move very differently. East of the river is the old walled city, India's first World Heritage City, and its pols: tight clusters of old houses on lanes where a car can barely turn. West of the river, from Navrangpura out to SG Highway, you find bungalows, wide roads and apartment towers with lifts.

A move from a pol in Khadia to a flat in Bodakdev crosses both worlds in one day. We bring a small vehicle to the lane, keep a bigger truck waiting on the main road, and cross the river at a quiet hour, usually early in the morning.

Heat is the third factor. From April to June, the afternoon sun is hard on people and goods, so loading starts at first light. Our office is in Gurgaon, which helps when your move is a transfer between Ahmedabad and Delhi NCR: we can plan the city-to-city move from both ends.

Finding your way

Bridges and Highways That Shape an Ahmedabad Move

Reference points we use to plan the river crossing and the way out of the city.

  1. Sabarmati Riverfront bridges

    Ellis Bridge, Nehru Bridge, Gandhi Bridge and the other road bridges across the Sabarmati link the old city with the west bank. They fill up at office hours, so we plan cross-river moves for the early morning.

  2. SG Highway

    The Sarkhej–Gandhinagar Highway is the spine of the western suburbs, lined with towers, offices and malls. Many societies open onto its service roads, so tell us which side of the highway your gate is on.

  3. SP Ring Road

    The Sardar Patel Ring Road runs right around the city. Outbound trucks use it to reach the Mumbai and Delhi highways, or Gandhinagar, without crossing the centre.

  4. Kalupur railway station

    Ahmedabad's main station sits at the edge of the old city, and the roads around it are crowded most of the day. Moves in nearby pols go best when the truck arrives before the markets open.

  5. Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway

    The quickest road south towards Vadodara. Most moves to Surat, Mumbai or Pune begin on this route.

Homes we move

Ahmedabad Homes: Pol Houses, Bungalows and SG Highway Towers

Pol houses in the old city are narrow and tall, often with steep wooden stairs, carved doors and a small inner courtyard. Furniture here tends to be old, solid and heavy. Before the day, we check whether big pieces will pass the stairs and the pol gate. Where the lane is too tight for any vehicle, our crew carries goods out by hand to the nearest point a vehicle can reach.

West of the river, many families live in bungalows in Paldi, Navrangpura or Satellite. These are easier to reach but hold more: heavy sofas, garden pots and often a wooden jhula. We take the jhula apart, bag and label its chains and fittings, and put it back together at the new home.

Along SG Highway and in Gota, Bopal and Chandkheda, newer homes are mostly apartment towers with lifts and society rules. Gandhinagar has its own mix: government quarters in the numbered sectors, and new towers around Kudasan and GIFT City.

What to Sort Out Before an Ahmedabad Move

  • Lane width in the old city

    Tell us roughly how wide your pol lane is and where the nearest main road is. We plan the vehicle size and the number of people around it.

  • Uttarayan and Navratri

    Around Uttarayan, on 14 or 15 January, rooftops and streets fill up for the kite festival. During Navratri, crowds and traffic run late into the night. Where we can, we steer moves in busy areas away from those days.

  • Society notice

    Many societies in the western suburbs want advance notice and a fixed time for moving. Check with the society secretary a few days before.

  • Office and business goods

    Moving business stock or office goods may need an e-way bill and invoices. Check the current GST rules with your accountant before the move date.

When to move

When to Shift House in Ahmedabad: Heat, Monsoon and Festivals

November to February is the best stretch for moving in Ahmedabad. Days are dry and comfortable, and loading can run through the day without a break for the heat.

The hot season runs from March to June, and April to June is the hardest part of it. We start at first light and aim to finish loading before noon. Keep medicines, plants and anything made of wax with you in the car. Electronics and polished wood should not sit on hot pavement, so we bring them out only when there is room for them on the truck.

The monsoon, from mid-June to mid-September, is lighter here than on the coast, but a heavy spell can still flood underpasses and low streets for a few hours. Also plan around Diwali and the Gujarati New Year that follows it, when many businesses close for several days.
