Thane is known as the city of lakes. Masunda, which locals call Talao Pali, sits in the old town near the station, and Upvan lies below the Yeoor hills on the Pokhran Road side. Around them are compact older societies. Ghodbunder Road, the state highway that curves north-west to the Western Express Highway, is lined with townships of tall towers instead.

The moves we plan from Thane are long ones. A family in a Kolshet tower is posted to Gurgaon, a Dombivli couple takes jobs in Pune or Bengaluru, or someone from Delhi joins an office in the Mumbai region. Thane Lakes, Highways and Junctions to Know

Reference points we use to time the truck's approach and its run out of the Mumbai region.

  1. Ghodbunder Road (State Highway 42)

    About 14 km from Kapurbawdi, where it meets the Eastern Express Highway, to Ghodbunder village on the Western Express Highway. Metro Line 4 is being built along it, so lanes narrow in places and a loaded truck moves slowly.

  2. Eastern Express Highway

    The highway of about 23.5 km that links Thane with Mumbai's eastern suburbs and the island city. Moves between Thane and Mumbai use it for at least part of the way.

  3. Masunda (Talao Pali) and Upvan lakes

    Talao Pali is in the busy old town, about a fifteen-minute walk from Thane station, beside the Gadkari Rangayatan theatre. Upvan sits where the Pokhran I and Pokhran II roads meet, under the Yeoor hills. Both are easy ways to describe where you live.

  4. Mumbai–Nashik Highway and Bhiwandi

    The road north-east towards Nashik passes Bhiwandi, about 15 km from Thane and one of Asia's biggest warehousing hubs. Heavy truck traffic around Bhiwandi can slow a loaded vehicle, so we allow for it in the transit plan.

  5. Thane station

    One of the busiest stations on the Central line and the old heart of the city. The roads around it are crowded for most of the day, so old-town moves start early.

Township Towers, Older Societies and New Flats Down the Line

Ghodbunder Road townships are small towns of their own, with many towers, a clubhouse and a central facility office. Moves there are well organised but rule-bound: a fixed move-out window, a booked service lift, gate passes for the crew and, in some cases, a refundable deposit against damage to common areas. Get the rules in writing before you fix the date.

Thane West's older societies, around Naupada, Panchpakhadi and Vartak Nagar, are smaller buildings with tight compounds and street parking, and some have no lift. There the truck stands on the road, extra hands work the stairs, and furniture is wrapped inside the flat before it reaches the narrow landing.

Along the Kalyan–Dombivli line, many buyers choose new towers for space and value. In some projects the first families move in while lifts and roads are still being finished. If you are moving into one, check that the lift works and the approach road can take a truck; if not, we can hold the goods in storage for a short while.

  • Parking in the old town

    Streets near the station and Talao Pali are busy and tight. A smaller vehicle may do the last stretch to your gate and shuttle goods to the main truck.

  • Starting the long haul

When to move

October to May gives the smoothest Thane moves. Roads are dry, and township slots are easier to get outside the festival weeks.

Thane's rain is heavily seasonal: around four-fifths of it falls between June and October. Stretches of Ghodbunder Road and low-lying areas can waterlog, and potholes slow loaded trucks. Ganeshotsav, often in late August or September, and Navratri bring processions and road closures across Thane, and some townships pause moves on the main festival days. If your date falls near them, lock it in a fortnight or more ahead.
