Kochi, still often called Cochin, is spread across the mainland and a chain of islands joined by bridges. A move from Kakkanad to Fort Kochi, or from Vypin to Edappally, depends on which bridges the truck can take and how busy they are at that hour. We plan the route before we plan the crew.

Kerala's monsoon is the other big factor. The south-west monsoon brings heavy rain from June to September, and lighter northeast rains follow from October to December. Damp air works on wood: heavy teak and rosewood can swell, and polish can cloud if it stays wrapped in a humid room. We pack with that in mind.

Finding your way

Which Kochi Bridges and Junctions Decide the Route?

Most Kochi moves cross at least one of these.

  1. Vyttila junction and hub

    Where NH66 meets the roads to Tripunithura and the city centre, beside the Vyttila Mobility Hub. It is one of the busiest points in Kochi, so we avoid it at peak hours where we can.

  2. Edappally junction

    Where NH66 and NH544 meet in the north of the city. Trucks heading for Thrissur, Coimbatore or Bengaluru leave from here, and moves into Kalamassery and Aluva pass through it.

  3. Goshree bridges

    The bridges linking mainland Ernakulam to Bolgatty, Vallarpadam and Vypin. Moves to and from Vypin cross here, and the island roads beyond are narrower than the mainland ones.

  4. Venduruthy and Thoppumpady bridges

    The route from the mainland across Willingdon Island to Thoppumpady and on to Fort Kochi. Houses in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry often sit on narrow streets, so we check the last few hundred metres before the day.

  5. Vallarpadam container terminal

    Kochi's international container transshipment terminal, on Vallarpadam island, open since 2011. Goods shipped home from the Gulf or elsewhere often arrive through the port here; once they clear customs, we can deliver them to your door. See international moving.

Homes we move

Kochi Homes: Towers, Old Family Houses and Locked Homes

Much of Kochi's newer housing is apartment towers in Kakkanad, Edappally, Kadavanthra and Vyttila. These work like flats anywhere: a lift to book, an association to inform and a truck bay to share. Towers near Infopark get busy at shift changes.

Older family homes, in Tripunithura, Fort Kochi or along the backwaters, often hold heavy wooden furniture: teak cots, rosewood almirahs, carved chests. Some pieces cannot be taken apart. We check doors and staircases in advance, bring enough hands, and wrap the wood first in a soft layer and then in plastic, so moisture is not trapped against the polish.

Some homes stay locked for months while the owner works abroad. If you are arranging such a move from overseas, a family member or caretaker can let our crew in, check the inventory with us and lock up afterwards.

Getting a Truck to Your Kochi Door

  • Island access

    Moves to Vypin, Fort Kochi or Mattancherry depend on bridge traffic and narrow approach roads. Share a location pin so we can plan the vehicle size.

  • Tight streets in West Kochi

    Some Fort Kochi and Mattancherry streets are too tight for a big truck. We may shuttle goods in a smaller vehicle to a larger one waiting on the main road.

  • Goods from abroad

    Household goods coming from the Gulf go through customs, and the allowances for returning residents depend on how long you lived abroad. Check your case with customs or your shipping agent before the goods arrive.

  • Association rules

    Many flat associations want notice and set hours for moving. Ask a few days before, and pass the rules on to us.

When to move

Moving House in Kochi Around the Two Monsoons

December to March is the driest part of the year in Kochi and the easiest time to move. Roads are clear of water, and goods go in and out of the truck without soaking up damp.

June to September brings the southwest monsoon, often in long, heavy spells. Low roads can flood quickly, and a full day of rain is common. We wrap every piece, carry spare sheeting and load so nothing sits in water. October to December adds the lighter northeast rains, often as afternoon or evening thunderstorms.

April and May are hot and very humid, with pre-monsoon storms. After a delivery in any wet month, open wooden items within a day or two and let them air; left wrapped in damp weather, they can grow mould.
