Mangaluru sits between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. The Gurupura river curves around the north of the city and the Netravati around the south, and every road move inland has to climb the ghats. In the monsoon, that climb decides the plan.

The rain is concentrated. Almost all of the city's yearly rain falls between May and September, while December to March stays very dry. A move in July needs sealed cartons, wrapped furniture and a ghat road that is open that week.

The city has long sent workers to the Middle East, and some families here ship goods to the Gulf or bring them home. We have no office in Mangaluru; from Gurgaon we plan moves across India and moves abroad, with both ends agreed before packing starts.

Mangaluru Roads, Ghats and the Port

The routes and places that shape how a truck reaches you and how it leaves the coast.

  1. NH-66, the coastal highway

    The west-coast highway runs north through Surathkal towards Udupi and Goa, and south towards Kerala. Moves up or down the coast stay on it the whole way.

  2. Shiradi Ghat on NH-75

    The direct climb towards Hassan and Bengaluru. It has been closed to heavy vehicles for long spells in the past, for repairs and after monsoon landslides, so we check its status before booking the truck.

  3. Charmadi and Sampaje ghats

    The other climbs up the Western Ghats, towards Chikkamagaluru and towards Madikeri. When Shiradi is shut, one of them may be the way up, though both are steep and winding with a loaded truck.

  4. New Mangalore Port, Panambur

    The major port north of the city, run by the New Mangalore Port Authority. Its approach roads carry heavy cargo traffic, which we allow for on the north side.

  5. Mangaluru airport, Bajpe

    The international airport on the high ground at Bajpe, north-east of the centre. A useful reference for homes on that side of the Gurupura.

Hillside Houses, City Flats and Homes Kept for the Family

Many Mangaluru homes are independent houses on sloping plots, in areas like Kadri, Bejai and Derebail. Lanes climb and turn, and a big truck often has to stop on the main road. From a photo of your street we decide on a smaller vehicle or a longer carry.

Newer flats around Hampankatta, Falnir and Kankanady have lifts and associations with move rules. Near NITK in Surathkal and the medical colleges, we also move smaller loads, such as a student's books, bed and bicycle at the end of a course.

When the owner is working in Dubai or Doha and the house has been shut for a year, the move still needs a person on the spot. We agree the inventory with you over a call, a relative opens the house on packing day and signs off the list with the crew, and the keys go back to them.

When to move

When to Move In or Out of Mangaluru

December to March is the best window: the city is very dry, the ghat roads are clear and cartons stay dry at both ends.

June to September is the heart of the monsoon, with long, heavy spells. Moves still happen, but they need a flexible date, a checked route over the ghats and every item wrapped. May brings the first heavy rain, and October can still bring strong showers.

April and May are hot and humid on the coast, so we load early in the day. Mangaluru's own Dasara celebrations in September or October bring crowds to the city centre; avoid those evenings if you live nearby.
