Thiruvananthapuram, still widely called Trivandrum, is built on low hills by the sea, close to the southern tip of India. Roads rise and dip between neighbourhoods like Kowdiar, Vellayambalam and Sasthamangalam, and many houses sit above or below the road on sloping plots.

As Kerala's capital, the city has a large government workforce. It is also home to the space research centre at Thumba and to Technopark, which calls itself the first IT park in India, spread over 768 acres at Kazhakkoottam. Postings and new jobs in all three bring families in and take them away.

For us, it is also the far end of the map: Delhi NCR is about 2,600 km away by road. We plan these long-distance moves from our Gurgaon office, with no branch in Thiruvananthapuram, and pack for about a week on the road.

Trivandrum Roads, Stations and the New Port

Reference points we use to plan the truck's approach and its road out of the city.

  1. Kovalam–Kazhakkoottam bypass (NH-66)

    The bypass that carries NH-66 past the city, from Kazhakkoottam in the north to Kovalam in the south. Trucks heading north to Kochi or south towards Tamil Nadu use it to keep out of the centre.

  2. Technopark, Kazhakkoottam

    The IT campus at Kazhakkoottam, with apartment towers around it. Shift traffic near its gates can slow a truck in the morning and evening.

  3. Thiruvananthapuram Central, Thampanoor

    The main railway station, across the road from the central bus station. The streets around both stay crowded through the day.

  4. Thiruvananthapuram North and South stations

    Kochuveli and Nemom stations were renamed Thiruvananthapuram North and South in 2024. Addresses near them may use either the old or the new name.

  5. Vizhinjam International Seaport

    The deep-water transshipment port on the southern coast, close to the East–West shipping route. The port says direct export-import operations began in August 2026.

Homes we move

Hill-Slope Houses, Government Quarters and Technopark Flats

Many homes in the central hills are independent houses on sloping plots, with steps down from the road or a steep drive up to the gate. A big truck may not be able to stop right outside. We plan a longer carry or a smaller vehicle, and bring extra hands for heavy pieces on the steps.

Government and institutional quarters come with rules: a vacating date, an inspection and sometimes a no-dues certificate before you leave. Ask your department for the process early and share the dates, so packing finishes before the inspection.

Around Technopark, in Kazhakkoottam and Sreekaryam, most newer homes are apartment towers with lifts and associations. Book the service lift and ask about move hours, especially if you want to load on a weekday.

December to March is the best window. The dry season sets in from December, and roads and hill drives stay dry.

The southwest monsoon usually arrives in early June and the northeast monsoon by October, so the city has two rainy seasons. Heavy spells can flood low roads for a few hours. Moves still run, with every item wrapped and a spare date if the forecast is bad.

April and May are hot and humid, with afternoon storms before the monsoon. If you are choosing a date in February or March, check when Attukal Pongala falls first.
