Madurai's old city is built in rings around the Meenakshi temple. Its streets form a concentric pattern, and several carry the names of Tamil months: Aadi, Chithirai, Avani Moola and Masi. Close to the temple the streets are narrow and crowded; further out they widen.

The Vaigai river runs through the middle of the city and splits it into two almost equal halves. The old city lies south of the river, while Tallakulam, Anna Nagar and KK Nagar are on the north bank, so a move from one to the other has to cross it.

We have no office in Madurai. Moves to and from the city are planned in Gurgaon as domestic relocations, and the long ones, such as Madurai to Delhi NCR, are packed for about a week on the road.

Madurai Landmarks That Guide the Route

Reference points we use to plan how a truck reaches your street.

  1. Meenakshi temple and the Masi streets

    The temple is the centre of the old city, ringed by the Chithirai, Avani Moola and Masi streets. Traffic is heavy and the lanes are tight, so trucks keep to the outer roads and a smaller vehicle does the last stretch.

  2. The Vaigai river

    Runs north-west to south-east through the city. A move between the old city and Anna Nagar, KK Nagar or Tallakulam crosses it, and the crossing is slow at busy hours.

  3. Madurai Junction

    An important railway junction for southern Tamil Nadu, on the western side of the old city. The streets around it stay busy through the day.

  4. Mattuthavani bus terminus

    The MGR integrated bus terminus in the north-east of the city. A handy reference for homes in KK Nagar and the roads towards Melur.

  5. Madurai Airport, Avaniapuram

    About 12 km from the city, on the southern side. Homes around Avaniapuram are often described by their distance from it.

  6. Kappalur

    A suburban industrial area on the city's south-west edge, with automotive manufacturers. Factory traffic on its approach roads is heaviest at shift times.

Row Houses in the Old City, Independent Homes Beyond

Close to the temple, many homes are old row houses and small buildings that share walls, with a narrow front, a steep stair and no lift. There is rarely room to park at the door, so the crew carries goods to a vehicle waiting on a wider street, and heavy wooden furniture is taken apart where it can be.

North of the river and in the southern colonies, such as Anna Nagar, KK Nagar, S.S. Colony and Thirunagar, most homes are independent houses or small apartment blocks on quieter roads. Parking is easier, but tell us if your street floods after a heavy shower in October or November.

Brass lamps, bronze idols and heavy vessels are common in Madurai homes. They are heavy for their size and dent easily, so each piece is wrapped on its own, packed in a small, strong carton and marked so nothing heavier is stacked on top.

    Large trucks cannot easily enter the busiest streets around the temple, and some are one-way. We plan a smaller vehicle for the last stretch and load early.

  • Festival crowds

    During the Chithirai festival in April or May, and on big temple days, roads near the temple and the Vaigai are packed. Pick another week if you can.

  • Summer heat

    From March to July, electronics and medicines are packed in the cooler hours, and the truck stays closed once it is loaded.

  • Long hauls north

    A Delhi NCR move covers about 2,400 km, so furniture is wrapped for a week on the road and you get a written inventory before the truck leaves.

When to move

Best Time of Year to Move in Madurai

December to February is the easiest window. The northeast monsoon has usually passed, days are warm rather than hot, and the roads are dry.

The hottest months run from March to July, and midday work is hard on people and on anything that melts. We start early and aim to finish loading before the worst of the afternoon heat.

October to December brings most of the rain, from the northeast monsoon, and heavy showers can flood low streets for a few hours. Check the calendar for the Chithirai festival too: it runs for about 15 days in the Tamil month of Chithirai, in April or May, and draws the temple's biggest crowds.
