Puducherry, still widely called Pondicherry, is a Union Territory town on the Bay of Bengal, surrounded on land by Tamil Nadu. A canal once split the town into the French Quarter and the Indian Quarter, and the grid of old streets on both sides still decides how close a truck can get to a house.

A few kilometres out, you are in another state. Auroville, a growing community of over 3,300 people from 60 nations, lies across the border in Tamil Nadu, as do some suburbs. A move between them and the town crosses that line, so the addresses on the move documents must be exact.

We are based in Gurgaon, not Puducherry. Moves in and out are planned from there as domestic relocations: up the coast to Chennai, west to Bengaluru, or north to Delhi NCR.

Finding your way

Puducherry Roads, the Canal and the Border

The routes and reference points we use to plan the approach and the way out of town.

  1. The canal and the old town

    The canal that once divided the French and Indian quarters runs north to south through the old town. The streets on either side are narrow, and a large truck often cannot stop outside a house, so we plan the vehicle size first.

  2. East Coast Road (ECR)

    The coastal road north to Chennai through Mahabalipuram, about 150 km. Moves between Puducherry and Chennai use it or the inland road through Tindivanam (about 170 km), whichever suits the day.

  3. The road to Auroville

    Auroville lies about 8 km north-west of the town, in Tamil Nadu. Some of its communities are reached by unpaved tracks, so we check access with you before the day.

  4. Puducherry railway station

    The end of a branch line from Villupuram Junction, at the southern edge of the old town. A simple reference point for homes on that side.

  5. Pondicherry University, Kalapet

    The university campus on the ECR at Kalapet, north of the town. Faculty and staff moves in and out follow the campus's own entry rules.

Homes we move

Heritage Houses, Suburban Homes and Auroville Communities

In White Town and the old Tamil streets, many homes are heritage houses with high ceilings, tall wooden doors, courtyards and old furniture that was made for the rooms. Doors and stairs can be narrower than the pieces inside. We measure first, take apart what comes apart and bring enough hands for what does not.

The newer suburbs, such as Lawspet, Reddiarpalayam and Moolakulam, are mostly independent houses and small apartment buildings on wider roads, with room to park a truck nearby.

Auroville is different again. Its communities have their own ways of working, and some homes sit among trees at the end of unpaved tracks. If you are leaving or arriving, check the community's arrangements for moving goods, and share the access route so we send a suitable vehicle.

What to Sort Out Before a Puducherry Move

  • Heritage-street access

    Narrow and one-way streets in the old town may need a smaller vehicle, with goods shifted to the main truck on a wider road.

  • Crossing into Tamil Nadu

    Auroville, Kottakuppam and the road to Chennai are in Tamil Nadu. We make sure the inventory and both addresses on the documents are exact, and check the current rules for your route before the date.

  • Liquor cannot travel

    Alcoholic drinks are on the list of items we cannot carry in a household load, so finish, gift or leave behind any bottles before packing day.

  • Cyclone watch

    From October to December we follow India Meteorological Department warnings for the coast and move the date if a storm is on its way.

When to move

Best Months for a Puducherry Move

January to March is the calmest window: the rains are over, the air is less humid than in summer and the coast roads are clear.

April to June is hot, and maximum temperatures may reach 41 °C. Morning packing and a closed truck help, and anything that melts should travel with you.

October to December brings the bulk of the year's rain from the northeast monsoon, and with it the cyclone risk. Cyclone Fengal made landfall near Puducherry on 30 November 2024, with heavy rain and flooding. If you must move then, keep a spare date and let us pack for a wet day.
