Lado Sarai is one of South Delhi's medieval sarais, near Mehrauli and the Qutub Minar, and Wikipedia's South Delhi district article counts it among the old sarais that are now severely congested. Following the lead of Hauz Khas Village, it has also grown into a fashion and design market, with galleries and design studios along its main road while the lanes behind it are still packed with houses and small flats.
Artwork does not pack like furniture. A framed canvas needs its corners guarded and nothing pressing on its face. A sculpture has to be held still inside its box. For pieces like these we use wooden crates, drums and insert plates, padded so nothing can shift. Glass on a frame is taped across, so that if it cracks in transit it does not cut into the work behind it.
The other challenge is the carry. Most village lanes are too narrow for a truck, so every piece leaves by hand. We walk the route from your door, count the turns, and bring enough people to keep large works flat and steady.
