Moving in South Delhi means planning for very different homes a few kilometres apart: walk-up builder floors in Saket, Malviya Nagar and Greater Kailash, DDA pocket flats in Vasant Kunj, government quarters in R.K. Puram and walled farmhouses in Chhatarpur and Sainik Farm. What they share is an access problem. Wikipedia's South Delhi district article calls the old villages among them, Hauz Khas Village and Chhattarpur Village included, severely congested, so where the truck stands and when matters more than the distance.

Which kind of home are you moving from?

Start with the area, because each one sets a different problem. The table draws on Wikipedia and the other sources listed below.

Area Homes, as described What to plan for Our page
Saket Blocks A to N: row houses, multi-storey and two-storey apartments Block lanes; mall traffic on Press Enclave Road Saket
Malviya Nagar Floors in three- and four-storey buildings, many rented Steep stairs; month-end lease changes Malviya Nagar
Greater Kailash 1 and 2 Builder floors and independent houses in lettered blocks Large furniture on narrow stairwells; M-Block markets GK 1, GK 2
Defence Colony 1960s houses, some rebuilt as builder floors Moving out for a rebuild, and back again Defence Colony
Hauz Khas DLF enclave of the 1960s, plus the old village Village lanes too tight for a truck Hauz Khas
Chhatarpur Farmhouses, and the congested village by the temple Farm gates and driveways; Navratri crowds Chhatarpur
Sainik Farm Farmhouses and large houses on internal lanes Guarded lane gates; several trucks Sainik Farm
Vasant Kunj DDA flats in Sectors A to E, split into pockets and blocks Flat category and floor; pocket gate Vasant Kunj
Vasant Vihar Plotted houses in Blocks A to F, and over 50 foreign missions Lane security; moves abroad Vasant Vihar
R.K. Puram CPWD government quarters, mostly double-storeyed blocks Shared stairs; a fixed date to vacate R.K. Puram

How do you get a truck to a door in a colony lane?

By deciding the standing spot first and working back to the door. In the planned colonies, the problem is cars: Saket's lettered blocks, the Greater Kailash blocks and Malviya Nagar's side roads can be lined with parked vehicles by evening, and builder floors often have stilt parking that is already full. In the old villages, the lanes themselves are too narrow.

  1. Find the nearest wide point. Walk from your gate to the nearest place a truck could stop without blocking the lane, and tell us how far it is.
  2. Ask neighbours to leave it clear. A word the evening before saves a long carry in the morning.
  3. Use a shuttle if needed. Where a full-size truck can't reach, a smaller vehicle carries loads out to it. In Hauz Khas Village, goods may go out on foot and on trolleys.
  4. Measure the stairs. Long sofas and sideboards in GK or Defence Colony floors may have to come apart to turn a landing.
  5. Plan the other end too. A Gurgaon tower will want a lift slot; another South Delhi floor brings the same lane problem again.

How do market hours affect loading?

They decide how much road you have. South Delhi's homes sit close to its markets: Wikipedia lists the Saket District Centre among Delhi's district centres, names the M and N Block markets in GK 1 and the M-Block market in GK 2, places the main Hauz Khas market in E Block, and notes that each of Vasant Vihar's six blocks has its own market.

We don't publish opening times for these markets, because they vary by shop and season. What we do is load early, before shoppers' cars take the kerb space, and keep the truck away from a market's busiest frontage. Festive dates are the ones to avoid. On New Year's Eve 2025, for example, a Delhi Traffic Police advisory kept heavy vehicles off Press Enclave Road, beside the Saket malls, in both directions from midday. Near Chhatarpur, Navratri is the date to work around: Wikipedia's page on the Chhatarpur Temple says a Katyayani shrine there opens only in the twice-yearly Navratri season, when thousands of people visit.

What does a farmhouse move in Chhatarpur or Sainik Farm involve?

A survey, a gate check and usually more than one vehicle. Wikipedia traces Sainik Farm to a 1960s cooperative for defence staff and their families; it lies below Saket, on the far side of the Mehrauli–Badarpur Road. In August 2026 ThePrint counted six RWAs across its blocks and adjoining pockets. Chhatarpur's farmhouses lie in villages such as Satbari and in the DLF Farms belt by Ghitorni metro station.

What to sort out before the first truck arrives:

  • Every gate on the way in. The lane gate, any guard post and the farm gate itself. Give the guards the date and vehicle numbers in advance.
  • Gate width and the drive. The biggest truck that fits through the gate and can turn on the drive saves trips.
  • What is outside the house. Garden furniture, planters, a gym, staff quarters and stores add loads that nobody counts on a quick look.
  • Cars. Two or three cars can go on carriers with our car transport service, the same day as the household.
  • Days, not hours. A large house is often packed over a day or two before loading.

What is different about R.K. Puram government quarters?

The deadline and the stairs. Wikipedia says R.K. Puram was developed by the CPWD south-west of the Secretariat and is mostly double-storeyed blocks of two- and three-bedroom flats for central government officers. Under CPWD norms, a 2011 ITPI journal paper explains, only the higher quarter types got lifts, which is why most moves here are carried down a common staircase.

The date is fixed by the rules, not by you. Under rule 44 of the General Pool Residential Accommodation Rules, 2017, someone allotted a different quarter has thirty days to shift out of the old one, and a posting outside Delhi comes with a separate retention period. Book the move well inside that window, and leave the vacating formalities with the Directorate of Estates time to finish.

How do Vasant Kunj flats and Vasant Vihar houses differ?

In nearly everything except the name. Vasant Kunj is divided, Wikipedia says, into Sectors A to E, then pockets such as C1 to C9, then lettered blocks. Much of it is DDA housing in three sizes: the authority's 2025 special housing scheme put HIG, MIG and LIG flats in Vasant Kunj up for sale. The flat category and the floor size the crew.

Vasant Vihar, by contrast, was carved out of the villages of Basant Gaon in the 1960s and planned as six blocks, A to F, according to Wikipedia, which also notes it houses over 50 diplomatic missions. Moves there tend to be larger houses, and some are moves abroad: see our international relocation service for that.

Which route goes from South Delhi to Gurgaon?

It depends where you start. From Vasant Kunj and Vasant Vihar, the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway, part of NH-48, is the usual road. From Chhatarpur and the farmhouse belt, the Mehrauli–Gurgaon Road is the other option: Wikipedia places Ghitorni on it, near the Gurgaon border and Vasant Kunj.

Either way, the truck spends its first stretch on Delhi roads, and a goods vehicle needs a No Entry Permission to run during the restricted hours, as the Delhi Traffic Police FAQ explains. We time the loading so it leaves outside them. South Delhi moves are crewed from our Gurgaon head office in Sector 110 or the Delhi branch in Dwarka Sector 12, whichever suits the job. Our packers and movers in Gurgaon page explains the unloading end.

What does a move between Gurgaon and South Delhi cost?

The price guide the owner set in October 2026 runs from Gurgaon into Delhi; you'll find it on our packers and movers in Delhi page too:

Home Gurgaon to Delhi
1 BHK ₹7,000–8,000
2 BHK ₹10,000–13,500
3 BHK ₹14,000–16,500

They are not a quote. A farmhouse or a large Sainik Farm house falls outside these sizes and is priced after a survey, and we publish no ranges for moves within Delhi.

What goes on a South Delhi moving checklist?

  • To do: The truck's standing spot, its distance from your door, and a neighbour asked to keep it clear
  • To do: Every gate between the road and your door, with guards given the date and vehicle numbers
  • To do: Market and festival dates near your home, including Navratri if you live near Chhatarpur
  • To do: Stair width and landing turns measured against your largest pieces
  • To do: For a government quarter, the last date you may keep it
  • To do: Whether part of the household needs storage between homes, for example during a Defence Colony rebuild

Key takeaway

In South Delhi, access decides the move: lanes and parked cars in the colonies, gates and driveways at the farmhouses, a fixed vacating date in R.K. Puram. Settle where the truck will stand and when, and the rest of the plan follows.

Everything here is general information for planning, not legal or official advice. Traffic advisories, housing rules and RWA practices change, so check them with Delhi Traffic Police, the Directorate of Estates or your RWA before you act.
