Moving to Gurugram goes best in three steps: choose an area by your daily commute, get your housing society's move-in terms before you book a truck, and keep your moving date clear of the wettest monsoon weeks. Only the central belt is on the metro: Wikipedia's article on the city lists five Delhi Metro Yellow Line stations in Gurgaon, and the Rapid Metro has eleven, while the newer belts are reached by road.
Which area should you choose when moving to Gurugram?
Start with where you will travel every day, then decide what kind of home you want. The Tribune notes that the first sectors, up to Sector 23, grew along the old Delhi–Gurgaon road, and that the city spread outwards once National Highway 8 came up, with Sectors 24 to 57 (except 31 to 38) developed after the 1990s.

The name "New Gurgaon" has no fixed boundary. Reporting on a toll increase in April 2021, The Tribune placed most New Gurugram families in Sectors 82 to 95, beyond the Kherki Daula plaza they cross to reach the rest of the city.

How do you get around Gurugram?
You get around by NH-48, two metro systems in the central belt, and newer arterial roads.
NH-48
Wikipedia names National Highway 48, the Delhi–Mumbai road, as the major highway linking the city; its 27.7 km stretch from the Delhi border to Kherki Dhaula was developed as the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway. It runs through the middle of the city, so check which side of it your office and flat are on.
The Yellow Line and Millennium City Centre
The Yellow Line's five Gurugram stations are Guru Dronacharya, Sikanderpur, MG Road, IFFCO Chowk and Millennium City Centre. That terminus, in Sector 29, was long called HUDA City Centre; Wikipedia's page on the station says it was renamed in July 2023 and is still widely known by the old name.
The Rapid Metro
According to Wikipedia's Rapid Metro article, its loop through Cyber City and DLF Phases 2 and 3 opened in November 2013, and a second section along Golf Course Road to Sector 55–56 opened in 2017. A walkway at Sikanderpur links it to the Yellow Line. Further lines are being built or planned.
The Southern Peripheral Road, Sohna Road and the Dwarka Expressway
In 2022 The Tribune reported a GMDA plan to upgrade the Southern Peripheral Road, a 14.3 km stretch linking the Faridabad road with NH-48, and noted it was "formerly known as the Golf Course Extension Road". The names overlap, so give drivers your sector number. Sohna Road is a six-lane corridor, with elevated stretches, that fully opened in July 2022. The Dwarka Expressway runs 27.6 km from Mahipalpur in Delhi to near Kherki Daula, has been open along its whole length since 2025, and serves as an alternate link to ease congestion on NH-48.
Is it Gurgaon or Gurugram?
Both names mean the same city, and Gurugram is the official one. Wikipedia records that Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced the proposal on 12 April 2016, citing the city's heritage and its link with Drona, and on 27 September 2016 said the Union Government had approved it. On 24 October 2016 The Tribune reported that the Haryana government had issued the notification renaming the city, with the district's likely to take longer. The old name is still in daily use, so search for flats and services under both.
What should you ask your society or RWA before moving in?
Ask the maintenance office, the RWA or the builder's facility team for its move-in terms before you fix a date with a mover. Every society sets its own, so treat these as questions, not rules:
- To do: Do I need a move-in NOC or approval form, and who issues it?
- To do: I am renting: do you want written consent from the owner as well?
- To do: How do I book the service lift, how far ahead, and can I hold it for the whole unloading?
- To do: Is there a refundable deposit, and when is it returned?
- To do: Will you issue a gate pass for the truck and crew, and what details do you need?
- To do: On which days and between which hours are moves allowed?
- To do: Where can the truck stand, and will a large truck fit through the gate?
- To do: If it rains on the day, can I move my slot without losing the booking or deposit?
Ask the society you are leaving the same questions, and whether it needs a no-dues slip before goods go out.

How does the monsoon affect your moving date?
The monsoon is the season most likely to upset a moving day. Wikipedia says it usually starts in the last week of June and continues till September, with August the wettest month, and calls the city "notorious for its urban floods every monsoon", naming areas on NH-8 around Hero Honda Chowk and Basai.
The Tribune reported 53 mm of rain in the city by 8:30 am on 11 August 2024, and waterlogging in more than a dozen sectors and on Sohna Road and Subhash Chowk, with the Gurugram–Delhi Expressway and several subways badly hit. Newer sectors flood too: in May 2026 The Tribune reported severe monsoon waterlogging on roads in Sectors 99 to 115.
What that means for your dates:
- If you can choose, move outside late June to September, and avoid August in particular.
- Keep a spare day between lease end and moving day.
- Start early and check the forecast the evening before.
