Bhubaneswar was designed as a new capital by the German planner Otto Königsberger, and its foundation stone was laid on 13 April 1948. The city is divided into units, each with a high school, shops and a dispensary, and most units were built to house government employees.

Around that plan are the older and newer cities: the temple lanes of Old Town, the campuses and IT offices of Patia and Chandrasekharpur to the north, and Cuttack across the Mahanadi, the other half of Odisha's twin cities.

The coast shapes the calendar. Cyclone Fani came ashore near Puri on 3 May 2019, and several days later about half of Bhubaneswar's electricity customers were still without power. We plan moves across India from Gurgaon, with no office in Odisha, and keep an eye on the forecast for every date.

Finding your way

Bhubaneswar Roads and Reference Points

The routes and places we use to plan the approach and the road out.

  1. NH-16

    The Kolkata–Chennai highway, part of the Golden Quadrilateral, runs through the city and on to Cuttack. Trucks for Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and the south leave on it.

  2. Infocity and Patia

    The IT and campus belt in the north, around the Infocity offices and the university campuses at Patia. Apartment towers here have lifts and move rules, and traffic peaks at office and college hours.

  3. Old Town and the Lingaraj temple

    The temple quarter in the south of the city, with narrow lanes and heavy festival crowds. A smaller vehicle often does the last stretch.

  4. Baramunda bus terminal

    The inter-state bus terminal on the west side, a common reference point for homes in Baramunda and Khandagiri.

  5. The Mahanadi and Cuttack

    Old Cuttack sits on a strip of land between the Mahanadi and the Kathajodi. Moves between the twin cities cross the river, and the older Cuttack lanes are tight for trucks.

  6. The road to Puri

    The road south-east towards Puri. During the Rath Yatra, usually in June or July, it carries very heavy pilgrim traffic.

Homes we move

Unit Quarters, New Towers and Old Cuttack Houses

The planned units near the centre are mostly government quarters and older houses on wide roads. Parking is rarely the problem; the handover is. Quarters are vacated on a set date after an inspection, so we plan the packing backwards from it.

North of the centre, in Patia, Chandrasekharpur and around Infocity, newer apartment towers house IT staff, faculty and students. Expect a service lift to book, an association to inform and a security desk that wants the crew list.

Cuttack is older and denser. Houses in its lanes share walls and have narrow stairs, so heavy furniture may need to come apart, and the truck waits on the main road while the crew carries goods out.

    Watch IMD bulletins in April and May and from October to December. If a storm is forecast, we move the date and can keep goods in storage until the roads clear.

    Universities and institutes have their own entry and move rules; get a gate pass for the truck before the day.

  • Festival traffic

    The Rath Yatra towards Puri, Durga Puja in both cities and Bali Jatra in Cuttack in November slow or close roads. We avoid the main days.

When to move

Best Months for a Bhubaneswar Move

December to February is the easiest window, after the cyclone season and before the heat. Days are dry and mild.

Temperatures in Bhubaneswar usually range from 11 to 44 °C, and April and May are the hardest months: hot, humid and sometimes stormy. Most of the year's rain falls from June to October, when low streets can waterlog.

Cyclones can form in two windows: April to May, as with Fani, and October to December. A move in these months needs a flexible date. In Cuttack, Durga Puja and then Bali Jatra in November fill the roads for days.
