Vijayawada stands on the banks of the Krishna, flanked by the Eastern Ghats and the Indrakeeladri hills, where the Kanaka Durga temple sits above the old town. Across the river lies Amaravati, now the state's capital in law, where building work resumed in June 2024.

For a mover, that means more moves now cross the Krishna by the Prakasam Barrage, between Vijayawada homes and Tadepalli, Mangalagiri or the capital area. Amaravati lies about 15 km south-west of Vijayawada, so a posting there can mean a home on either bank.

Vijayawada Crossings, Junctions and Highways

The points that decide the truck's route in and out of the city.

  1. Prakasam Barrage

    The barrage across the Krishna that links NTR district with Guntur district and carries the road to Tadepalli. Moves to the capital region usually cross here, and it is busy at office hours.

  2. Benz Circle

    A busy junction and a residential and commercial area in the east-central city. Moves on the eastern side are planned around its traffic.

  3. NH-16 and NH-65

    NH-16, the Kolkata–Chennai highway, and NH-65, the road west to Hyderabad, meet at Vijayawada. Trucks for Hyderabad take NH-65; trucks for Visakhapatnam or Chennai stay on NH-16.

  4. Vijayawada Junction

    One of the busiest stations on Indian Railways, in the heart of the city. The roads around it are crowded through the day.

  5. Kanaka Durga temple, Indrakeeladri

    The hill temple on the riverbank above the old town. During Dasara, large crowds of pilgrims fill the approach roads and the ghats below.

Homes we move

Apartments, Old-Town Houses and Capital-Region Homes

Central and eastern Vijayawada, around Benz Circle, Patamata and Mogalrajapuram, is a mix of apartment blocks and independent houses on busy roads. Lifts in older blocks are small, so wardrobes and beds often have to come apart, and the truck needs a spot to stand off the main road.

In One Town and around the station, houses are packed close on narrow lanes. There we usually load a smaller vehicle at the door and transfer to the main truck on a wider road.

Across the river, homes in Tadepalli and Mangalagiri are close to the capital area. If your move follows a posting there, share your joining date and the handover date of your old home so the packing fits between them.

  • Flood-prone areas

    In late August and early September 2024, the Budameru rivulet overflowed after exceptionally heavy rain and flooded Ajit Singh Nagar and nearby areas. If your street took water then, tell us, and we keep a spare date in the rainy months.

  • Crossing the barrage

    Office-hour traffic on the Prakasam Barrage can hold a truck up, so we time capital-region moves outside it.

  • Summer heat

    May is usually the hottest month. Electronics are packed early in the day, and medicines stay with you rather than in the truck.

  • Dasara crowds

    During Dasara at the Kanaka Durga temple, roads near Indrakeeladri and the riverfront are packed. We avoid those days for moves near the old town.

When to move

Best Season for a Vijayawada Move

November to February is the easiest time, with dry, cooler days and clear roads.

March to June is hot, and May is usually the hottest month. Work starts early and the truck is closed as soon as it is loaded. Plan for heat at the other end too if you are heading to Hyderabad or Nagpur.

The city gets rain from both monsoons, the southwest from June and the northeast later in the year, and the heaviest spells can flood low streets. Dasara, in September or October, brings big crowds to Indrakeeladri; if you can, keep your date clear of the main festival days.
