In most cities the truck parks at the gate. In the old city of Banaras it often cannot get within a few hundred metres. The galis near the ghats are narrow, crowded and full of steps, so a move from Bengali Tola or Chowk starts with a simple question: how do the goods get from the house to the road?

Our answer is a shuttle. The crew packs each room, then carries the cartons and wrapped furniture out by hand, or on a handcart where the lane allows, to the nearest point where the truck can stand. Heavy pieces are taken apart first, and every item is numbered so nothing goes astray on the way out.

Outside the old city, moves look more familiar: campus quarters at BHU, colony houses in Sigra and Mahmoorganj, and newer flats along the ring road. Many are long hauls to Lucknow, Delhi NCR or Kolkata.

Where Can a Truck Stand in Varanasi? Stations, Crossings and the Old-City Edge

Points we use to fix where the truck stands and how far the goods travel on foot.

  1. Godowlia crossing

    The busy junction where the roads give way to the lanes leading down to Dashashwamedh. For many ghat-side homes, this area is as close as a truck can get, and vehicle entry beyond it is often restricted.

  2. Varanasi Junction (Cantt station)

    The main railway station, on the cantonment side of the city. The roads around it stay crowded, which matters for moves from Nadesar and the Cantonment area.

  3. Banaras station

    Formerly Manduadih, the station was renamed Banaras and sits beside the Banaras Locomotive Works colony in the south-west. The colonies around it are easier for trucks than the old city.

  4. BHU main gate at Lanka

    The university's main entrance opens onto Lanka, one of the city's busiest crossings. Campus moves need the estate office's clearance, and the truck enters at the time it allows.

  5. Ring Road

    The ring road around the city lets trucks bound for Lucknow, Prayagraj or Patna skip the centre. Newer flats and colonies are coming up along it.

Moving a Lane House, BHU Quarter or Colony Home in Varanasi

Old-city houses are tall and narrow, often four or five storeys on a small plot, with steep stairs and doorways just wide enough for one person. Wardrobes and beds usually have to come apart before they can leave. Some pieces were built in the room and will not go through the door; we tell you that when we see the house, not on moving day.

BHU quarters range from older bungalows to flats in campus blocks. The estate office sets the vacating process, and faculty moves often fall in the summer break, so May and June dates go early. Students with a few cartons and a cycle can ask for a small-load quote.

Colony homes in Sigra, Mahmoorganj and Nadesar are mostly independent houses and low-rise flats with road access. Banaras homes also keep a lot of silk: saris, brocade and old family pieces. We fold them in clean cloth, pack them flat in their own cartons and keep those cartons on top of the load.

    The galis are quietest early in the morning. We start then, so the carry does not clash with pilgrims, shoppers and deliveries.

  • Festival days

    Dev Deepawali, Mahashivratri, the month of Sawan and other big festivals bring huge crowds, and roads near the ghats may be closed to vehicles. We keep old-city moves away from these dates.

  • Monsoon and the river

    When the Ganga rises in the monsoon, the ghats and the lowest lanes can flood. Homes near the river may need a different carry route in those weeks.

  • Truck hours in the city

    Trucks may be barred from central roads during the day. We check the timing in force and plan the loading around it.

When to move

When Should You Move in Varanasi: Heat, Floods, Fog or Festivals?

Late October to February is the most comfortable time for a Varanasi move. December and January bring cold mornings and fog on the highways to Lucknow and Prayagraj, so long-distance trucks set off once visibility improves.

April to June is fiercely hot. Carrying goods through a gali in the afternoon is hard on the crew and bad for anything that melts, so where we can, we start at dawn and finish by late morning.

From July to September, heavy rain and the rising river slow old-city moves. Colony and campus moves carry on with extra cover. Check the festival calendar too: Dev Deepawali falls on the Kartik full moon, fifteen days after Diwali, in November or early December, and draws enormous crowds to the ghats, so keep old-city moves well clear of it.
