Dehradun sits in a valley between the Shivalik range to the south and the Himalayan foothills to the north. The drive in from Delhi is mostly flat until the last stretch, and many homes are on roads that climb, so the plan changes once the truck enters the valley.

Which Roads Bring a Moving Truck into Dehradun and Up the Hills?

The roads and places that decide how a truck reaches your door, and how long the last few kilometres take.

  1. Delhi–Dehradun Expressway

    The expressway via Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur was inaugurated in April 2026 and shortens the plains part of the drive. We still check any limits on goods vehicles and the day's traffic before fixing the route.

  2. Mohand and the Datkali tunnel

    Between Saharanpur and the valley, the road crosses the Shivalik hills through the Rajaji forest near Mohand, partly on an elevated wildlife corridor, and through the short Datkali tunnel before dropping into Dehradun. It is the one hilly stretch between Delhi and the city.

  3. ISBT and Saharanpur Road

    The inter-state bus terminal on Saharanpur Road is a common reference point. Clement Town and the southern colonies are reached from here or from the Haridwar road without any climb.

  4. Chakrata Road, FRI and IMA

    The road west past the Forest Research Institute and the Indian Military Academy runs through the institute belt around Prem Nagar. Campus and cantonment homes here need entry passes arranged in advance.

  5. Rajpur Road and the Mussoorie road

    Rajpur Road runs north from the Clock Tower and turns into the road up to Mussoorie. Homes off its upper end can be steep and narrow to reach, so we ask for a photo of the approach.

  6. Jolly Grant Airport

    About 20 km south-east of the city at Doiwala, on the Rishikesh side. Useful if family members fly in for moving day; the road there is flat and easy for a loaded truck.

Moving a Bungalow, Campus Quarter or Hillside House in Dehradun

Older parts of Dehradun, like Dalanwala and the lower Rajpur Road, have bungalows with gardens, verandas and high ceilings. They hold large wooden furniture, full bookshelves and many plant pots. We pack books in small cartons so each one stays light, and wrap garden furniture on its own so mud does not reach the rest of the load.

School and institute quarters are often partly furnished, so we list which items are yours before packing starts. Campuses usually have a set handover day and a gate office that wants the vehicle number in advance.

Newer houses and cottages up the Sahastradhara and Mussoorie roads often sit on slopes, with steps down from the road and no room for a truck to turn. We plan how many hands the carry needs and where the vehicle can wait safely. Retirees arriving from the plains usually want the home ready on day one, so on a full home move our crew unpacks, assembles beds and places furniture room by room.

What Can Hold Up a Dehradun Move: Hill Roads, Landslides and Gates

  • A smaller vehicle for the last stretch

    Some hill roads are too steep or narrow for a large truck. We transfer the goods to a smaller vehicle at a safe, level point and carry on from there.

  • Landslide checks in the monsoon

    Heavy rain can bring debris down on hill roads and close them for hours or days. From July to September we check road conditions before setting out, and the goods stay safe in the main truck if a road is shut.

  • Limits on heavy vehicles

    Some hill roads, including parts of the Mussoorie road, may have limits or set timings for heavy vehicles. We check what applies on the day before choosing the vehicle.

  • Passes for campuses and cantonments

    Schools, institutes and defence areas usually want the truck and crew registered in advance. Ask the estate office or your unit early.

When to move

What Is the Best Time of Year to Move to Dehradun?

Dehradun gets a lot of rain, most of it in the June to September monsoon. Downpours can be heavy and long, and hill roads may close after landslides. Moves within the valley go ahead in the monsoon with covered loading and waterproof wrapping, but anything that climbs needs a flexible date.

October and November are clear and cool, and March to June is mostly dry, though May can be warm in the valley. These are the best windows, especially for a move that goes uphill.

December and January are cold. Mornings can be foggy in the valley and on the plains roads to Delhi, so long-distance trucks start later. School moves bunch around the start and end of the academic year, and the summer tourist season crowds the Mussoorie road at weekends, so book early if your date falls in either.
